Hi Tim. What a great site.
just an aside on the dartmoor characters. Would Sammy Harris be a suitable inclusion?
Not sure if you know of him but he had a scrap yard at Lettaford up until 1970,s or 80,s. There is a book written by his daughter Peggy, who was brought up on the yard and is worth a read. Peggy could not read or write. She attended an evening class in Exeter and pupils were encouraged to write about their past. Peggy's was so extraordinary that it was published in 2009.
I lived in South Tawton in the late sixties-early seventies and remember Sammy from trips to his yard looking for car spares. He also used to frequent the Kings Arms in South Zeal with his pal, Mark Small, a gypsy from Whiddon Down.
The Kings Arms was Mark's office and he would frequently get called on the public phone there.
Life on a Dartmoor Scrapyard. Peggy Harris. Edgemoor Publishing. I have seen it for sale in The Dartmoor information shops.
