This category of ancient Dartmoor encompasses many of the historic features and traditions of Dartmoor. But with great personal bias towards the prehistoric features such as stone circles, stone rows, menhirs, hillforts, cairns, and kists, all of which abound on the moor. It is probably because of Dartmoor's topology that they remain today, purely from the fact that agriculture, especially arable farming is contained on the lower lands on the edge of the moor and the remains by in large on the upper moor. If this was not the case we would probably find that the majority of the features would have been ploughed out years ago. That is not to say that many of the Bronze Age structures have not been destroyed at the Dartmoor Despoilers indicates, that aside there still is a wealth of antiquity to discover upon Dartmoor. The majority of features date from the Bronze Age with one or two possibly being a little early and are from the Late Neolithic. The fascinating thing with the prehistoric periods is that we don't really know the purpose of such things as standing stones, menhirs, stone rows and cairns. I must confess, this is my pet subject and so this section, overtime will reflect this.
